How Digital Dependence Affects Our Daily Lives? — 4 Signs of Digital Dependence
Here, I aim at creating awareness of how overusing gadgets can negatively affect our daily lives and mentality.
The Internet has become an integral part of our lives. Whether it be education, work, or social media- everything is digital today.
As this necessity continues taking over us, have you ever thought about what impact excessive dependence on the Internet could have on your mental health?
In this article, I aim at creating awareness of how overusing our devices can negatively affect people’s daily lives and mentality.
4 Signs of Digital Dependence
Internet is an excellent tool and resource that we can use to learn everything, but it’s also capable of becoming an addiction. You might be addicted without even knowing, which could affect your daily mental wellbeing if left unchecked.
With increased usage owing to easy accessibility; one might not realize where his/her ‘line’ should stand.
Thus, below is a list of four signs that will help you understand your symptoms towards increasing digital dependence and some tips to improve your lifestyle.
1. Connecting every part of your life to the virtual world.
The individual may find themselves isolated from real-life connections and resorting to the virtual world for companionship.
They feel as though no one can understand them in their day-to-day life, which leads this person to isolate themselves even further by connecting everything they do with a computer or phone screen instead of face value interactions where you can see someone’s true intentions towards yours.
Trusting unknown people too easily and putting your life in public — can backfire and affect your mental health in the longer run.
2. Choosing your gadgets over family and friends.
It’s not surprising that people would abandon family and friends for shiny new gadgets. It’s the way of our times, after all — we are always looking to be entertained or distracted from reality with something more colourful than what life has thrown at us already.
Thus, we try to ignore everyone by running away from reality and getting into a technology bubble of digital dependence.

3. Lack of interest in physical activities.
Technology is changing the way we live, work and play. It’s a great thing for productivity, but what about our health?
The human body needs physical activity to function optimally — without it, there could be dire consequences such as being out-of-shape or obese (not good).
There are many reasons why people lose interest in physical activities, and one of them is — because you can get entertained whenever you want.
Thus, you don’t feel the need to prioritize your physical well-being.
4. Under eating with a disturbed mind or overeating while using gadgets.
Eating disorders are crucial mental and physical illnesses that are triggered due to excessive gadget use.
A distracted mind is the most fragile component in mindless eating because this causes you to either eat over or eat under your requirements, making you more prone to eating disorders.
If you like to eat in front of the T.V. or computer, you’ll constantly get distracted by what’s happening on screen, and you’ll lose track of your eating habits.
How to Eradicate Digital Dependence?
To eradicate digital dependence entirely, try below-mentioned following tips:
- Turn of the pop-up notifications.
- Stop using T.V. or phones during eating.
- Stop using your phone 1-hour before sleeping.
- Take mini walk breaks after every 1-hour of desktop activity.
- Set boundaries around e-mail and text message response time, keep it restricted to twice a day.
- Instead of reading e-books and tracking fitness on the phone- try reading an actual book and follow your repetitions on your wrist-stopwatch.
Every week, take a day or two completely off from technology use — this is also known as Digital Detox. During this time — spend more time with family, chill with your close friends, go out in nature, and practice self-care treatments for enhanced mental focus.
